I keep forgetting the whole legal issue with hearing protection on the other side of the pond... so let's leave that for another thread. Quote:
kind of like a muffler? I once toyed with the idea of "throwing the sound" to one side. The idea was essentially a silencer where there would be drilled holes in one side. This would "brake" the silencer on one side and keep it functioning on the other. This would let the sound travel normally on one side of the marker/gun (the idea was for an actual rifle) and not at all on the other. The point of this all would be that the sound source would seem to be at a place far to the side of the actual shooter. Perhaps this could be done with the markers internal sound? albeit, I think that whatever you do to the marker itself will not be noticed due to the far greater sound emitted from the barrel. |

| Re: cutting the slots and... WELL MY HOUSE HAS SOUND PROOF WALLS!!! leaving the front door open and then opening some windows IMO would make the pop quieter. a rocket cock would prevent noise MAINLY coming from the back of the gun (sear uncocking / recocking against the hammer, the hammer hitting the valve, and a little noise from the air being released from the valave out of the breech Porting parallel from your feedneck would help prevent blow back into your feed neck / hopper. |

| Re: cutting the slots and... Yeah kinda like how a muffler works. The main idea is to vent the gas from the shot as slow and as non "violent" as possible. But there is only so much you can do on this end of the gun. I do like your idea devlin, maybe being able to "throw" the report of the paintgun. if they only made barrels ported on one side. ![]()

but the "pop" is not connected to the porting of the marker itself, as the pop stems from the air used to move the ball forward. Porting the marker itself only affects the blowback air (and removes the muffling effect of the shell on the sound emitted by the moving parts) on a mechanical marker you can try this: cock the marker and fire it without having any air connected (= the sound emitted by the marker itself) and then air it up and fire a round (= sound emitted by the barrel and marker). Okay this does not take into consideration the blowback gas, but that is aimed towards you anyhow so that sound is louder behind the gun than infront of it. Quote:
I thought palmer's made barrels with porting according to customers' whishes? And I think it could be made "easily", get a barrel with straight porting (not spiral) and just tape all shut except for those on one side? like this freak front would only require 3 slits of tape (it has 4 rows of porting) ![]() EDIT: I really should try that when i go home this summer. |

| Re: cutting the slots and... A ported barrel will have a better effect when it comes to the sound coming out of the marker especially on the stock model 98 / 98 customs that came with he short stock barrel. Their are plenty of barrels out there that will do the job. As your local shop if you could try some out. |

| Re: cutting the slots and... 98 custom is a mechanical beast you can hear it recock in your tank. With a real gun you use subsonic bullets and reverse porting to keep target down range from hearing you easily. but the bottom line is the barrel is the loudest part. Also all 98s operate @ high presure so there is no real way to get around it. I like the noise my self |
