| Blackrain's Model 98 build UPDATES: 12/17/2012 It's painted and clear coated. Time to start cleaning everything up with NEVRDULL. Make everything bright and shiney ROOL: It's what I do. Guess I'll start buffing parts. Looking at the hammer, I might have to find a new one. I'll see what happens.11/30/2012 Have alot of new parts sitting here next to me. Rebuild parts, parts to take this project onto a whole new direction. Pink and black is the new theme color. I will put on some chrome, but that's to break everything up ![]() So what is the goal. Well get this gun shooting and make it look new out of the box, even though it's used. Also this is a theme gun. Pictures will follow later this week. 11/24/2012 Ordered a new 32 DEG 14" barrel. Tomorrow 11/25/2012 I will begin to dremal strip the remainder of the gun body and lay on a coat of primer. The bolt replacement and valve rebuild kit arrived today. Atleast I can get that finished. Tippmann Model 98 project: NOTHING HERE IS ETCHED IN STONE. I CAN CHANGE MY MIND AT ANY TIME. THIS IS JUST A ROUGH DRAFT. Sit back and follow this. If you know who sold this gun to me, please let me know. As usual all comments and help is welcome ![]() Later, Blackrain Well I thought I would go ahead and start finishing up a few projects. I’m going to start with this simple Tippmann Model 98. I’m not much of a Tippmann guy, but I bought this on a whim with ideas in mind. Looks Ugly, Looks are deceiving: So we have this UGLY Tippmann 98 that I bought on MCB a while back. I wanted to rebuild this for my Nephew and give it to him for a Birthday present. But Super Game happened and I found him an SW-1 instead. Spare parts that I ordered: Did you think that I would just let it go without replacement parts? This thing has seen a lot of playing time. We are going to refurbish to where it is almost 100% brand new. If you are going to do it, do it right. Better the build, better performance, better the resale Also look for the best deals. I didn't pay a whole lot for these parts. However they are quality ![]() Another reason: When I sell this gun, there is documented proof, that I replaced parts and polished the internal. ![]() ![]() ![]() Few extras left over from another project: A little Pro Team, RAP4, BT............ ![]() ![]() ![]() Barrel: Ordered a 32 Deg barrel. I know they are probably out of business but who cares. I'll just bore it out on the lathe for freak inserts. ![]() So what to do with this thing: First thing is strip the paint with this nice stripper that loves to eat paint. Make sure you have gloves and safety glasses when you do this. Also make sure you are in a well vented area. Once all the paint has bubbled up, scrap and remove all the old paint. Strip it down to bare metal. Remove paint from inside of body halves. I would use the paint stripper. You really aren’t going to hurt the internals, and I’m going to use some nice polishing stuff on it later. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Then wash it in warm water with JOY dish soap. Remove the last of paint residue and rinse with the hose. ![]() Time to buff up the internals and replace all the O-rings: Put the internals to the buffer and buff them till they are shiny and slick. Then wash them in JOY dish washing soap. This will remove any compound left on the parts. Put the parts to the side. Regardless of what people think, in my personal opinion, shiny parts reduce friction and give a faster recharge rate. Biggest down fall of the 98: The built in hand grip! Why do they put this here, instead of making the ASA directly under the gun body. Yea I could mill it off then pay SSC to make me a plug, but I want to get rid of this gun, not keep it. I buy this vertical adapter kit for real cheap at a local field. I would have been happier using one of the many, vertical MAG ASA that I own. Now that all the internals are put together, it’s time to screw in the Vertical ASA adapter kit. Make sure you use some thread tape. If for some reason you decide to use LOCTITE, make sure you use BLUE LOCTITE ONLY. Blue LOCTITE fills the thread gaps to prevent air leakage. Polish the inside of body: "You can do this step last if you want" I'm not much for manual labor. I just can't sit with three different types of sand paper hand sanding. Mechanical removal is what I use in situations like this. Simple and efficient. Now that all internals are polished, time to polish the body parts. First I start off with my Dremal tool and these nice little pads. I'm only going to use this to remove and paint residue. I'm not going to try and polish the body, I have something else for that. After, I'll wash it with JOY dish washing soap and dry it off. As mention I hate doing things by hand. The ARMY taught me how to polish brass or metal in two fashions: 1-By Hand 2-By Mechanical I'll be using choice #1 and using NevrDull. It works well and doesn't require alot of effort ![]() ![]() Time to primer the outer body: This is the brand of primer that I use. It works well. Made for aluminum. Sometimes I use cheap primer. I would recommed roughing the body a little. I just run the Dremal pad over it. Tape the inside clean surface with painters tape. Lay the body halves down flat and begin to prime evenly with aluminum primer. Let dry. Repeat with primer till you have a nice even coat ![]() ![]() Time to paint: CANDY PINK is the Flavor of choice. This is going to make it hard to sell. I’m sure with the chrome and black touches it will give it a nice look. I’ve never had a pink gun. With the few SCARES I’ve had over the last few yrs with the Wife, I need all the KARMA I can get. ![]() ![]() So evenly paint the gun parts. Let dry, repeat as needed. Then spray on the gloss sealer. Freak boring the barrel: ![]() While waiting for the primer to dry. Once the FREAK boring is completed, I run the hone down to clean up the inside edge (Thanks for the tip Red Neck Sniper). Let’s put it back together: Make sure everything is where it is suppose to be. Power tube, detent, hammer, springs, the buffer washer etc. Adding the final touch: I like chrome. | Re: Blackrain's Model 98 build Just a couple of comments on what looks to be an interesting rebuild project: Quote:
So what if they're out of business, indeed. 32 Deg products were good bits of kit in their day, and if they haven't been used to death that shouldn't change. A good barrel stays a good barrel, paintballs shouldn't wear it out. Quote:
I'm thinking of building a pink Tippy as my next project. I've already seen the handgrips I want for it... ![]() |

I don't care if they are out of business, That just makes this build less expensive To some players it would be an issue, then they wouldn't have anyone to complain to I have Breast cancer grip panels for this project. If it wasn't for that stupid built in fore grip, this would have been a much better build and I would have put a little cash into it. I'll have some probably tomorrow or Friday. I'm going to do a little clean up on the edges and polish up the inside body. As mentioned above, I never follow my own plan Later, Blackrain ![]() |
