Ninja Paintball Safety Warning - Never use OIL with COMPRESSED AIR

Copy/pasted the text for those that are not able to read the document or view the document on their smart devices.

Ninja Paintball would like to issue a safety advisory regarding the use of oil in compressed air systems. First and foremost, oil and compressed air DO NOT mix. Some players have taken to the practice of using oil as a quick-fix to stop leaks in their fill nipple or to repair a damaged or worn fill nipple seal. Unfortunately, this can create a very hazardous situation.

When oil is exposed to compressed air, the oil can become flammable, and in some cases can ignite. As air is compressed while filling, the amount of oxygen (as well as the other gases in the air) is increased and condensed. Fire, also known as combustion, or an exothermic oxidation reaction, requires three things to start:

1) Oxygen
2) Fuel
3) Heat

The temperature needed to start a particular fuel burning is known as that fuel's flash point. As the amount of oxygen a fuel is exposed to increases, the flash point drops and could ignite the fumes or oil. There are many oils which are perfectly safe at room temperature and air pressure. However, when the oxygen content around them increases; as with air compressed into a paintball marker's HPA tank, the flash point can lower to below the temperature of the fill air and cause the oil or fumes to ignite. This is the principle at work in the cylinders of a diesel engine.

Paintball safety lies in the hands of players, store operators, and field operators. DO NOT put oil of any kind in your compressed air cylinder or regulator. No lubricants should be used on the regulator unless the are explicitly recommended by the manufacturer.

If you experience a leak in your fill nipple, Ninja Paintball advises replacing the fill nipple o-ring or the entire fill nipple assembly, as fill nipples can and will wear out over time. If you have any questions, please contact the manufacturer of your regulator or you can contact Ninja Paintball direct.

Here's a copy of the safety warning in case anyone would like to print it out and post it up.

thanks for posting the reminder to those who may not know....sort of common sense once you think about it, and common sense isn't so common....i'm assuming there's a reason you're posting this and something happened?

Re: Ninja Paintball Safety Warning - Never use OIL with COMPRESSED AIR

Having read some of the responses from the original sticky on this subject I think it should be stated that HPA is not something to be feared any more then CO2. Just respect it and don't do something stupid.

If you have read these posts and heed their warnings and advice you are safe as you can be.

Wait, does this mean that you shouldn't oil the ASA too?

Re: Ninja Paintball Safety Warning - Never use OIL with COMPRESSED AIR

From my understanding it should be relatively safe to use oil in the ASA as the compressed air out of the tank is only about 800 to 850 PSI which should be below the mixtures flash point. Also as it's on the output side the oil will typically be blown into the gun and away from the tank.

The danger lays in the oil getting into the tank it's self, so unless the tank is empty and you inserted it onto the ASA and engaged it while the ASA is drowning in oil and left the gun upright so the tank is standing up, then proceeded to air it up, I doubt this would happen. Obviously this scenario is absurd enough on it's own.

The problem is not the tanks design, it's the people putting dangerous foreign substances into the tank through the fill nipple, either intentionally or unintentionally.

Unfortunately the "Safety Hazard" is about as easy as preventing some one from putting racing alcohol into their fuel tank, or any foreign substance for that matter.

Re: Ninja Paintball Safety Warning - Never use OIL with COMPRESSED AIR

Yeah putting oil through the ASA is perfectly safe. Since the tank outputs at a lower pressure, the air that oil comes in contact with isn't going to ignite the oil.

And yeah, like Mortus said, it's not something that can be fixed. It's like trying to get rid of gravity. It's just a fact of life. Oil is flammable. Whe exposed to eough pressure it will ignite, simple as that.

Although somehow Ninja got away with it with their special reg lube...
