And in his case since he's going to play speed and woods I wouldn't recomend a red dot.

If you like them and they help your game than thats great! But when your saying that without a red dot your just spraying and praying thats not true.

what I'm saying is that a good reddot normally costs between 15 and 30 dollers. if he is playing at a commersial field I wouldn't be surprised if he saves that much in paint after just a few days of play.

Re: New to paintball and just bought ...

I find that for me trying to aim thru a red dot is difficult and there is no point in putting a sight on your marker if you cant put balls on target.

The biggest advantage i have found is accuracy. For accuracy you will need three things.

Consistency for your air source and for a 98 this would mean a reg. You want your marker to do the same thing on each shot.

A good barrel. Nothings beats a good bore match but there are several decent barrels that don't bore match out there

Decent paint. You cant expect your paint to fly strait if its shaped like an egg.

Now being as your just getting into paintball you wont need most of that for a while.
My recomendation to you is to first pick up a new barrel and loader.

For a barrel i have heard nothing but good things about a J&J

For a loader you can pick up any walmart special and it will be just fine for a 98

Re: New to paintball and just bought ...

Well first I have a couple questions. How many time have you played with your gun at the field? How often do you play (or plan to play)?

If you have never played with your gun then I suggest going out to the feild and playing before buying any upgrades. We can all suggest upgrades but it really comes down to the owner and their wants/need of the gun.

Now to the upgrades.

1.HPA IS THE VERY FIRST UPGRADE I RECOMMEND. Its consistent, better on your gun, in the long run cheaper, etc (theres more but Iv talked way to much about HPA on this forum. Im sure the guys are getting tired of it. lol). Also if you get HPA you will not need a reg.

2. A good barrel helps. Sense the 98 is a VERY long gun and you want something to speedball with I suggest a 10 or 8 inch barrel. The 98 also does way a good bit more than most speedball guns but without shrouds, stocks, megs, etc it will be ok. Keep in mind. Your barrel only shots as well as your paint so buy decent paint.

3. Loader. I prefer an electric hopper over the cyclone especially for speedball. The cyclone is just to big. Look into the Halo B. FYI in the future depending how much you speedball you might want to have your 98 drilled for center feed.

4 Egrip. i suggest the APE board instead of the WAS (what tippmanns sells) board. Virtue also makes a 98 board but a virtue in a 98 is a little over kill.

Im not a fan of sights. Just play with your gun enough to get used to where and how it shoots. The one shot will idea works but not all the time.

WARNING- If you really get into speedball expect to be getting another gun eventually. lol

Welcome the the forum and the sport!!!

Re: New to paintball and just bought ...

Reddots and/or sights are only as good as the person using correctly. Not everyone can use them properly. Some have reddots simply for looks. Other than that, T.A.G. pretty much said everything I need to say on this subject.

Re: New to paintball and just bought ...

I'm just curious... have yall ever played with a reddot site? I'm not just talking once or twice. I mean constantly, practiced with it, played with it, aimed with it. I played without one for my first 2 years of play and honestly it's a good thing that my gun was full auto. then when I sold my spyder and got a tippmann I started using a reddot site, and have been using it constantly for a year now. I've said it before and I will say it again. If I could only use one mod on my gun it would be a reddot site.

are you sure that the site you have now won't fit the already existing rail? I have a picitiny site too and it fits just fine on the 98 rail.

Re: New to paintball and just bought ...

I did when i first started playing but as i played more i found that it was just a pain for me to use. After i developed a consistent muscle memory for shouldering my marker it became unnecessary.

Either way every one is entitled to his/her opinion. If a red dot works for you great, it wont work for everyone. Now lets get this thread back on track, if you would like to discuss the pros and cons of red dots it should probably be in a new thread. Don't take that the wrong way, im not trying to start anything were just getting off topic

Re: New to paintball and just bought ...

These are my recommendations, based on my experience:

1. HPA, if you have easy access to a filling station. A 68/4500 CF tank will be just fine. An 88/4500 is what I prefer.

If you don't have easy access to an HPA filling station (like me, grrrrr), and you're stuck with CO2, then a regulator or an expansion chamber is a good investment. You can also have your CO2 tanks fitted with an anti-siphon tube.

2. Cyclone feed or electric hopper. Invert Halo Too works fine for the 98, plus it is very affordable.

3. A better barrel. I have a Smart Parts Linear on my 98, and I love it. J&J ceramic barrels also work great with most paint.

4. Paint. Try to get the best paint you can afford. Your barrel will shoot as good as the paint you use. Draxxus Blaze, Diablo Formula 13, RPS Premium, and Marballizers, all of these work fine for me. I also use Draxxus Recsport when my wallet is kind of short in cash (Which usually is)

Hope this helps

Police protection is an oxymoron. Free citizens must protect themselves. Police do not protect you from crime. They usually just investigate the crime after it happens and then call someone in to clean up the mess.

Re: New to paintball and just bought ...

Instead of quoting 3 people, just read posts #13, 14, and 18

IMO The first thing to upgrade is your MASK! but for your gun, the barrel is the first thing to change out (stock barrels blow. Literally). Then get a hopper, on stock 98 any electric hopper will do. If you get an RT or E Trigger then a faster hopper may be better but still most electric hoppers will hold up nicely with the 98. The cyclone is bulky and heavy, Im not a fan of it. But it will save you batteries. But if you can remember to turn your hopper off after games then you wont go threw batteries as quickly.
