rough paint problem

Alright so i got a problem i have yet to encounter when painting a gun. i usually sand everything down to the bare metal with the exception of maybe some hard places to sand down, prime it with krylon in at least 2 light coats, and then apply my paint the same way.

however this time i left a little bit of the original paint and after my primer was put on i noticed bubbles where it looked like the original paint was coming up under it. i would sand that out down to bare metal and try again. but the same results keep coming up.

now i always expect the paint to show rough spots that my naked i didnt see in the bare metal. but this is more than what i expected, so does anybody have an explanation and answer to the problem?

Re: rough paint problem

sounds like there may be trace oil deposits or fingerprints that weren't cleaned off. I always give my markers a good cleaning... warm soapy water, denatured alcohol, whatever... just to make sure the paint will stick properly

Re: rough paint problem

I would also say it sounds as if theres some oil on the marker still.

Starting over may get you the best results.... yes, it's a pain in the rump, but proper prep work and a little patience will pay off in the end.

Re: rough paint problem

Paint stripper works. a sand blaster would be nice. definitely gets into all the little nooks and crannies with little or no elbow grease. I did that with one of my 98's once. worked like a charm. A nice fine sand is good, but I've also heard baking soda works well in a sand blaster. Abrasive enough to remove the paint, but fine enough that it doesn't take any meat off.
