D

Dead box: n. A term used for a specified location on a paintball field where eliminated players are supposed to wait for the game to finish

Dead man's walk: n. (slang) A strategy wherein a player tries to appear glum as they stand up and walk off the field pretending that they are hit when in fact they are not, in hopes of gaining the element of surprise or a position of advantage over the opposition. It relies upon the opposition not realizing that the player’s hands are not above their head, which is the accepted gesture to indicate that one is eliminated. This is very risky, and experienced players will rarely be fooled. An experienced player will merely ask the player if he is eliminated (while covering him with their paintgun) and will shoot them if they do not answer quickly enough. Some people consider the dead man’s walk to be cheating, and many fields prohibit it.

Debounce: n; A program included in and electronic marker’s circuit board to eliminate electronic noise that the circuit board may erroneously interpret as a trigger action (i.e. trigger pull) and fire the marker. A marker with a very high debounce setting will result in the circuitry in the gun interpreting every little electronic noise as a trigger pull, thus allowing for extremely high rates of fire.

Detent Ball: A round device inside some paintball guns that keeps a paintball in place until the gun’s bolt pushes the paint into the barrel, thereby stopping more than one paintball from loading into a paintball gun’s chamber per cycle.

Double Action: A marker that cocks and fires with one push of the trigger.

Drop Forward: n. A device attached to the paintball gun that moves the tank further forward, but still under the grip, to create better balance and a smaller profile.

Dwell: n. The amount of time that the solenoid valve of an electronic marker remains open when activated, measured in .25 millisecond intervals. Dwell time thus determines the volume of air that is used to propel each paintball. Increase in the dwell will usually increase velocity.
