n00b here with a question

Hey guys, had a question about a 98C I came across. I can't tell what model it is. I think you are supposed to be able to tell by the serial number??? The only number I see stamped on the gun is on the right side above the grip and trigger. The number is 767397. I think that's it. It's little hard to read due to the paint coming off of it. Can any of you help me determine what model and how old it might be?

Re: n00b here with a question

The different versions look a bit different so if you could show us a picture I think we might be able to help you...

does it have a rail on top?
does it have "gills"?
does it have "act" stamped on the grips?
does it have porting in the middle of the barrel?
does it say "98 custom", "custom pro", "model 98" on the side?

I can get a pic up tomorrow for sure. It doesn't have a rail on top. Not sure what you mean by gills, but I imagine if it had it I would see it. The grip has TPI stamped on it. I don't notice any porting. And it has "Tippmann 98 Custom" on the side.

Re: n00b here with a question

It looks to me like a basic 98custom non act. Thou some of the older ones have a different sear set up, I have one where the springs hook to points inside not placed in.

Re: n00b here with a question

What you have there is the original model 98 custom. And as Jimmarc said, it's pre-act...That is the best model to have imo..

Seems like it. Mine is 911366 and was produced before Tippmann released ACT and the Pro series. Mine I estimate at about 10 years, though I can't remember exactly when I bought it.

Just to note a 98 Custom will last a lifetime or more with some minor maintenance.

Re: n00b here with a question

Thanks guys! I took it out today for the first time and had a blast. It doesn't shoot straight at all. The balls go out a different direction every time one shoots out. A guy at the field said I had a pos generic barrel on there and that was what was probably causing that. Other than that it ran like a champ. I love it!

Re: n00b here with a question

Some barrels do that, but I have found the biggest cause of paint shooting like tha is either the paint is bad or you FPS is too high. To me it seems tippys shoot best around 285 FPS, some may find it different but that is what mine likes the best so far.

I have a J&J 14 inch barrels on my Alpha Black and it shoots nice with it.

Re: n00b here with a question

Ya 280-285 your marker will be shooting pretty good
But what i belive you have there now is a stock barrel if you get a cheap good barrel
Like a CP 14" or a j&j 14" you will see a difference in accuracy for sure!

But if you wanna go all out then bore match your paint
With a barrel kit, as they provide you with different sized backs
But that's down the road if you wanna go that way
