Open Area Crossing Tactics

1. Stay low
2. watch your sides
3. keep to the sides of the area, hopefully you will find better cover..
4. if necessary, use cover fire if you have a clear threat.. use cover fire and crawl to get close.. youll be more effective at closer range
5. if your staying low, try to take the gear off your back and pull it behind you to keep your profile smaller and harder to hit and keep your head down at all times.. to look forward, position your body perpedicular to the place you want to look; dont give them an easy headshot.

Re: Open Area Crossing Tactics

Getting a lay of the land is critical to a successful crawl across open terrain. Knowing where the slight rises and berms are will help you avoid detection, as will moving as slow as possible.

If you have to zig-zag in your crawl to follow the terrain, do it, because if you get lazy your crawl will have been for nothing anyways. Try not to use your elbows and knees, so much as your forearms and shins, as spreading the weight out will prevent discomfort later.

Try to have someone stay back, to watch your progress and lay down a suppressive volley if you are detected. Get up, sprint to a new position, and drop. Hopefully the opposition will lose track of you in the crossfire.

Running bent over is good for small, very short runs, but it seriously slows you down and keeps your from returning fire quickly, so in the open it is less effective than simply running gun up, firing the whole way.

We do a fair bit of this at some of the outlaw fields we play at, since there is a lot of grass land in Alberta, with lots of meadows even in the densest bush.

Re: Open Area Crossing Tactics

Generally when we cross the large fields at our place, we try to go straight through the middle. This keeps us safe from the unknown areas along the tree line. We also try to estimate the enemies numbers, and ALWAYS cross with superior numbers. When possible send out advanced scouts to try to spot ambushes. Cross your main force in a wide sweeping formation, and be ready to drop quickly to a prone position. If available, have armor or artillery support standing by. A fast moving armor reaction can turn a field ambush into panic in the enemies line, especially when the armor's presence is kept secret. Artillery can have the same effect, but if the enemy is well concealed or has dug in, may have little to no actual effect.

Re: Open Area Crossing Tactics

I'm a fan of bumping across in teams of two while two others cover you
then again if you're low on guys just dead sprint across it, don't zig zag it just wastes time and makes you look silly. you don't have to keep you gun up, but be ready to slide into something and shoot!
